毫無(wú)疑問(wèn),兩棲無(wú)尾類主要通過(guò)聲音通訊的方式進(jìn)行交流。無(wú)尾類的鳴叫行為復(fù)雜多變,用途十分廣泛,常見(jiàn)的有廣告鳴叫、爭(zhēng)斗鳴叫、求愛(ài)鳴叫、遭遇鳴叫、求救鳴叫和釋放鳴叫等鳴叫方式。
人們?cè)诎l(fā)現(xiàn)青蛙會(huì)叫的同時(shí)也發(fā)現(xiàn)它們有一個(gè)能夠膨大的鳴囊,而且這個(gè)鳴囊還是個(gè)效果很好的共振箱——能夠?qū)⒙曇粜盘?hào)放大許多倍。因此,人們認(rèn)為鳴囊是無(wú)尾類促進(jìn)鳴叫效率提高的進(jìn)化產(chǎn)物。鳴囊通過(guò)降低體腔與環(huán)境的阻抗失調(diào)使聲音能量損失達(dá)到最少,增加鳴叫率并使聲音朝大范圍角度傳播。然而大家并沒(méi)有認(rèn)識(shí)到不斷伸縮的鳴囊也是一種視覺(jué)信號(hào)。
后來(lái)發(fā)現(xiàn)許多無(wú)尾類都具有顏色各異、形態(tài)迥然的鳴囊,認(rèn)為膨大的鳴囊在配偶選擇的過(guò)程中作為一種視覺(jué)信號(hào)與鳴叫信號(hào)共同作用。雌泡蟾明顯偏好帶有鳴囊視覺(jué)信號(hào)和聲音信號(hào)結(jié)合的刺激。并且推測(cè)鳴囊的視覺(jué)線索主要用于大合唱時(shí)對(duì)潛在配偶和競(jìng)爭(zhēng)對(duì)手的偵測(cè)和定位。但是這種視覺(jué)信號(hào)僅僅只是鳴叫信號(hào)的補(bǔ)充,并不能獨(dú)立發(fā)揮作用。
第一次證明在雄性保護(hù)領(lǐng)地時(shí)顫動(dòng)的鳴囊具有視覺(jué)線索的是箭毒蛙。只有存在聲音信號(hào)和視覺(jué)信號(hào)雙重刺激時(shí),雄性箭毒蛙才會(huì)有打斗行為。鳴囊上亮麗的顏色是一種重要的展示,東非溪流蟾蛙即使不叫,黃色的鳴囊也能引發(fā)雄性間的爭(zhēng)斗。地棲的白唇蛙鳴囊不斷伸縮敲擊地面產(chǎn)生一種震動(dòng)信號(hào)來(lái)克服異種間合唱造成的噪音干擾。雄性紅眼樹(shù)蛙甚至通過(guò)植物枝干的震動(dòng)來(lái)警告入侵者。后來(lái)的諸多實(shí)驗(yàn)終于證明視覺(jué)展示既可以與聲音信號(hào)共同作用,也可以不依賴聲音信號(hào)獨(dú)立表達(dá)具體內(nèi)容。
無(wú)尾類最引人注意并廣為人知的視覺(jué)信號(hào)行為是“foot flagging”,即“招手”行為。雄性圓點(diǎn)湍蛙(
Staurois guttatus)招手的時(shí)候后腿抬起并伸直,充分展開(kāi)腳趾間彩色的蹼帶,姿勢(shì)十分有趣。據(jù)報(bào)道,目前有16種無(wú)尾類具“招手”行為,主要用于領(lǐng)地保護(hù)和雄性競(jìng)爭(zhēng)。聲音信號(hào)容易受到環(huán)境噪音的干擾,而視覺(jué)信號(hào)則不存在這樣的問(wèn)題。所以,人們推測(cè)婆羅湍蛙的招手行為是其在嘈雜的溪流環(huán)境中進(jìn)行通訊的有效手段。多半蛙的招手行為會(huì)緊跟鳴叫行為后發(fā)生,但人們也發(fā)現(xiàn)跳舞蛙的招手行為并沒(méi)有與鳴叫行為一起形成復(fù)合信號(hào)。Preininger等人推測(cè)這種顯而易見(jiàn)的招手行為是身體攻擊的儀式化。爭(zhēng)斗性的招手行為可以近一步發(fā)展成為“踢腿”行為,這種打斗技巧主要用于近距離的遭遇戰(zhàn),跟羚羊的恐嚇動(dòng)作相似。
無(wú)尾類視覺(jué)信號(hào)行為的另一個(gè)例子是繁殖期的雄性摩爾蛙會(huì)暫時(shí)得著上藍(lán)色。這種視覺(jué)信號(hào)能夠快速進(jìn)行配偶識(shí)別。
視覺(jué)信號(hào)不管是取代聲音信號(hào)獨(dú)立發(fā)揮作用,還是與其耦合共同發(fā)揮作用,都已經(jīng)徹底改變了我們對(duì)于無(wú)尾兩棲類信號(hào)通訊行為的認(rèn)識(shí)。
